Lamborghini’s dedication to Sustainable Luxury manifested as the Urus SE, the Italian Sports car manufacturer’s latest and first plug-in hybrid super SUV, unveiled on April 25th, 2024, at Auto China Beijing 2024 (http://www.autochinashow.org/). With deliveries set to begin at the end of 2024, let’s explore Lamborghini’s engineering marvel.
The Lamborghini Urus SE establishes a new standard in the luxury super SUV category excelling in comfort, performance, efficiency, emissions, and driving experience. Its ICE-electric hybrid drivetrain boosts power from 666 CV to 800 CV, while achieving an impressive 80% reduction in emissions compared to the original Urus S. This power increase is complemented by higher speeds, distinctive driving modes, and enhanced driving dynamics, positioning the Urus SE as a true sustainable luxury vehicle of the future.
The re-engineered twin-turbo 4.0 V8 generates 620 CV (456 kW) of power and 800 Nm of torque. Working in tandem with this engine is an electric powertrain producing 192 CV (141 kW) of power and 483 Nm of torque. Lamborghini has focused extensively on calibrating both powertrains to achieve a combined output of 800 CV (588 kW) at 6000 rpm and a total torque of 950 Nm, available from as low as 1750 rpm up to 5750 rpm, ensuring top-tier performance from every perspective. A 25.9-kWh lithium-ion battery is positioned beneath the load floor and above the electronically controlled rear differential.
The permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor, integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission, functions not just to augment the V8 engine’s performance but also as a traction enhancer, transforming the Lamborghini Urus SE into a fully electric 4WD vehicle capable of traveling more than 60 km in EV mode.
A pioneering feature in the Lamborghini Urus SE is its centrally positioned longitudinal electric torque vectoring system, equipped with an electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch. This advanced system dynamically allocates driving torque between the front and rear axles, ensuring seamless distribution. Coupled with the newly integrated electronic limited-slip differential on the rear axle, it provides “on-demand” oversteering capability, delivering a driving experience akin to high-performance sports cars.
These systems are meticulously engineered and fine-tuned to excel across various grip conditions and driving styles, ensuring optimal traction and agility on racetracks, desert dunes, ice, or dirt. With the Urus SE accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds, it solidifies its position as the most powerful Urus yet and the quickest production car in its segment, setting a new standard in the Super SUV category.
The Lamborghini Urus SE showcases dynamic design elements that emphasize sportiness and muscularity. At the front, a new hood with a seamless, floating design enhances the vehicle’s athletic profile. The headlight clusters feature matrix LED technology with a new light signature inspired by Lamborghini’s bull logo. Redesigned bumper and front grill elements further accentuate its bold aesthetic.
At the rear, a redesigned cargo hatch integrates Gallardo-inspired elements, connecting taillight clusters with “Y” lights and a new rear diffuser for enhanced sporty proportions and stability. The diffuser and new spoiler increase rear downforce by 35% at high speeds compared to the Urus S, improving stability.
Aerodynamic efficiency is boosted by new under-body air vents and revamped air ducts, increasing airflow to cool mechanical and engine components by 15% over the original Urus. Enhanced management of airflows for the braking system results in a 30% improvement in air cooling compared to previous designs.
The cabin of the Lamborghini Urus SE embodies Lamborghini’s “feel like a pilot” design ethos with updates that enhance its lightweight and sophisticated character, reminiscent of the Revuelto concept. Key updates include a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen at the center of the dashboard, featuring an intuitive Human Machine Interface (HMI) with updated graphics. Design details such as anodized aluminum trim with Y-shaped elements, new panel and seat coverings, and a tactile mechanical pushbutton panel reflect meticulous design direction by Lamborghini Centro Stile.
The digital instrument cluster and touchscreen display are seamlessly integrated into the Lamborghini Infotainment System (LIS), offering drivers access to advanced features including a dedicated telemetry system for the SE model and enhanced displays for driving assistance, improving situational awareness.
Tailor the Lamborghini Urus SE to your tastes with a range of unrivaled customizations offered by Lamborghini. The Urus SE features updated alloy wheels with new 23” Galanthus rims and Pirelli P Zero tires, available in three sizes (21″ to 23″) to cater to different preferences for comfort and sportiness. Scorpion Winter 2 tires are also available for colder seasons. All tires include Pirelli Elect technology to optimize the performance of the electrified Urus.
The color range has expanded to over 100 bodywork options, including two new launch colors: Arancio Egon (orange) with an Arancio Apodis (orange) interior, and Bianco Sapphirus (white) with a Terra Kedros (terracotta) interior. The interior offers 47 color combinations and four types of Q-citura embroidery, with additional customization available through the Ad Personam program, allowing owners to create a truly unique Urus SE.
The Lamborghini Urus SE introduces significant enhancements, primarily through its hybrid powertrain, which integrates six traditional driving modes with four new Electric Performance Strategies (EPS), totaling eleven selectable options. These include familiar modes like Strada, Sport, and Corsa for road and track conditions, alongside Neve, Sabbia, and Terra for various off-road surfaces. New EPS modes like EV Drive prioritize electric operation for urban settings, offering over 60 km of electric range and speeds exceeding 130 km/h, with seamless V8 engine support at higher velocities or torque demands. Hybrid mode optimizes efficiency and comfort in everyday driving, while Recharge mode rapidly replenishes up to 80% of battery capacity. Performance mode, available across multiple driving conditions, emphasizes the Lamborghini Urus SE’s dynamic capabilities, adjusting air suspension, steering, drivability, and engine sound to suit each mode’s characteristics. This comprehensive approach enhances both sustainability and performance, defining the Lamborghini Urus SE as a dual-hearted super SUV that redefines Lamborghini’s distinctive personality.
With its pioneering hybrid powertrain and uncompromising performance, the Urus SE not only embodies Lamborghini’s commitment to innovation but also heralds a new era of sustainable luxury in the world of high-performance SUVs. Its seamless integration of electric and thermal power sources not only enhances efficiency but also amplifies the exhilarating driving dynamics expected from a Lamborghini. The Urus SE stands as a testament to Lamborghini’s relentless pursuit of automotive excellence, ensuring every journey is both thrilling and environmentally responsible
